Practical and with clear purpose. That’s what I like in my photographic pursuits. In a work sense at least. This will be made under reasonable conditions at a reasonable price and it’ll serve you well for years to come. It will not be perfect, and some luck may go a long way. But it will work and I will be satisfied.

And then there’s the more exploratory and experimental play. The stuff of testing techniques and generally rejiggering how I see. Its purpose is play in the pursuit of aesthetic and technical revelations. That’s what the above photo is, loosely. And the more of this stuff I can squeeze in the better, unless I’m booked solid with fistfuls of cash awaiting my mailbox.

A good balance, usually.
