First. They still don’t have outlets, and just like their American counterparts, the outlets they do have do not work. Second, they’re beautiful. These European airports. The chairs are glorious, even if they’re not significantly more comfortable. The spaces are calmer, more leisurely. It just hit me that they don’t have CNN blaring out from universally invisible speakers. You can sit quietly and read without your personal (audible) space being bombarded by sensationalist currentest of current events in both analyzed and and advertised form.
They’re paranoia free. And patriotic messaging free. Their customs area isn’t plastered with their national flags and, I kid you not, numbered lists about how they guarantee you that they will treat you with dignity and respect and you know they will because they know they’re the front door to this country and are therefore representing the best intentions of AMERICA and while you wait please feast your eyes on this patriotic film about how great America is. Of course it’s in English and not a word in that entrance hall was in another language, despite handling hundreds of weary folks straight off an Air France jet.
Welcome back.
