At polo, if there’s not a mallet in your hand there’s a beer. Between games we are reduced to mere single-handed organisms, milling about, being joyous and thankful for such an urban paradise, and frequently quenching a thirst that has nothing at all to do with hydration.
I couldn’t come up with any clever or even satisfactory title for this. But something about it is profoundly calming to me. It’s this between-the-game silence on the court, when the asphalt has emptied its mortals to the benches and takes a break in its two dimensional solitude.
One of us eventually has to meander out there, set down our bottle, and serve as fate’s courier through a “randomized” shuffle of the mallets that splits us into teams for the next bout.
And mead in solo cups.
