There were no books. No magazines. Scant conversation across clique lines. But cellphones abounded, the generation’s tool of choice for ultimate distraction. Ignore the immediate environment, excuse yourself from all present surroundings, sink into the majestic universe held between your hands.
Admittedly these human sculptures of intense beauty among the crowd did lift and turn a few heads. Everyone there was very, deeply New York in their dress. A tribe of surface, covered in impenetrable designer skins that simmered in coolness. I talked to most everyone eventually, if briefly, and I can confirm that everyone there was mortal.
