The Corner Umbrella

I’ve been walk-commuting to campus lately (Central Square [Cambridge] to Northeastern). A splendid journey down Mass Ave, past MIT, over the Charles River, through the hipness of Back Bay, and finally to the classroom. Just over two miles with a time clocking in at around 45 minutes. On the way home the camera was in hand.

And I can’t pin down what exactly stands out about this shot. I was pretty sure I’d post something else, but my eye keeps coming back to this. Is it mere bokeh combined with a sharp umbrella?

I suspect it’s mostly lighting. The orange that dances on the umbrella’s black fabric. The reddish slivers of highlights that fleet on the leather jacket’s folds. The face that floats on its scarf, otherwise surrounded by darkness.

I’ll have to give this one some time to sink in.
