Another throwback to the year 2009, this time in a visitation to the final bike polo tournament before my departure from the East Coast to the Far East. If your monitor is generally overly bright or low in contrast, my most heartfelt condolences are extended to you. This should appear as a moody and brooding photo flush with deep blacks and general drama.
It is of course the moment before the THREE-TWO-ONE-POLO shout in a bike polo match. The two players at center catch the eye first, both to their light colors in the arms/helmet as well as their sharp focus when compared to the rest of the image. But three makes a team, and the third here is the Menace himself at right, decked out in full hockey regalia as usual.
Perhaps what I like most about this image is the intense focus of the players. White Helmet peers through his safety glasses, just beneath the tight brim of his hat, whilst the other two players also stare forward in anticipation. I forget what position this team came in (from the I-Polo-NYC tournament Fall 2009), but it’s a solid lineup to be sure.
The archive work continues so there just may be more throwbacks in the coming days.
