Waiting for the L

Finally back to the suburban hinterlands after a long weekend of heavy-backpacked adventure. Back to work. Back to the skatepark after work. Back to editing through unwieldy gigabyte-size stacks of images. This one stood out.

Compositional stuff aside, I really just like the textures and little details throughout. The blurred circle of the garbage can. The watercolor-esque blotches on the totally blurred foreground sign at left. The industrial mesh accent on the column behind our figure. The brim of his hat. The way the blue stripe goes from lined to smooth as it recedes.

Compositionally, there’s this huge heft on the left side of the frame. These powerful vertical lines with their weighty beige filling.

Most importantly however are two things. The first is his head breaking into the blue. It puts him smack dab in the middle of perhaps the strongest sight line in the image. Second is the nearly perfect 90 degree angle his legs make. It’s this odd geometric quirk.

Also a friend remarked rather positively on this one whilst flipping through my camera.
