skaters – tons of photos from the past couple days

Brought the flash out today at the park and kept it popping. I’m constrained to on-camera flash for now as I haven’t swapped my Nikon unit for a Canon one… when that day comes (soon) I’ll be shooting with it off-camera/on a lightstand somewhere, which tends to lead to much more interestingly lit pieces.
Perhaps what makes this photo click for me is the isolation of the figure. Of course the arrangement of limbs and board make him very dynamic within the void, but alas that’s secondary to the fact that he’s suspended in time without place. The soles of his shoes and the white edge of the board make the edges really pop/would look totally different if those weren’t so bright.
The ambiguity of perspective is also pretty neat. Where is he coming from and going to? Is the board beneath him slanted or parallel with the ground? How’d he get so high up?
It also just occurred to me that the layout of this photo is perfect for advertising/other text-laden usage. Plenty of space for ad copy and other words without really tarnishing the core of it all. Something to keep in mind for commercial work, should that come hither.
this came out well with the flash.
