More Light Play

I’m not particularly fond of this as a photo (maybe it’ll grow on me eventually), but I think it’s another great example of what playing with lights can lead to. In post I did a bit of tweaking on the background color and I blacked out what scant detail may have been on the face itself, but the bulk of this was straight from camera. Some minor crop got the head to where I wanted it.

Since I’ve been shooting with both a flash and a big reflector, both my tripod and light stand are accounted for so I have to hand-hold the camera at arm’s length. It’s an exercise in avoiding the “myspace photo,” which I would define as any self portrait at arm’s length shot for the purpose of using as a profile photo on MySpace (or now Facebook). There was an explosion of this type of shooting that came along with the rise of cheap digital cameras and the proliferation of social networking sites. The photos themselves are usually awful (especially peoples’ expressions), but in a way they’re very genuine and telling about the person… which is what they were created for… so they’re arguably successful images…

And now to shoot.
