I’m pained by this photo, though only just now, because I had to throw it in the “uncategorized” category, a first for me. I can’t justify calling it a portrait because only the subject’s feet are remotely in tact. It’s not in New York. It’s not on the street. It’s not a party. Well, I suppose things in general could be worse, and I’ll just have to live with having a single image in this “uncategorized” place for a while.

So this is shot into a wall of mirrors, except that the cursive “Uptown” is written in neon ON the mirror plane itself. And this, my friends, is one of the domains of my dear buddy Gaurk. Also one of my most beloved places in Minneapolis, home to some great filmage. The strange green walls. The beige counter tops. The old tile and older carpet. Ahhh, charm.

And maybe that’s enough for this to be a successful image for me. I’m not so sure how it will fare with ya’ll. My feeling is that it holds its own pretty well, given that sweet glowing lettering seemingly hovering in front of a wall and its posters. A general symmetry keeps everything else balanced. Even the number of cups stacked at each soda machine are almost the same.

The problem, however, is the unevenness of it all. Look at the top. I could have warped the image in Photoshop so that all of that was level and didn’t go from railing to no railing. But I don’t mess with my memories, much. Or at least I try not to. Perhaps I try not to do superficial edits like that. But then again, that’s not really going to change anything in the image. I don’t know. Perhaps I just don’t want to drag images of this nature into the great manipulator to make’em “right.”

Uptown Theater, man.

  1. The last couple things I noticed about this photo are your feet at the top of the frame, and the bike tire in the bottom right. Can you send me the hi-res file?
