Red Yellow White

I’ll confess this image was a 100% happy accident. Casually shot from the hip while walking to the corner of the court. It wasn’t the best from a sequence of 8 images, it wasn’t one of 200 that I shot while walking to the corner, it was … it was just a one-off click as this guy rode by. That being said, I’ll gush about how much I love it, just don’t think any of this was intentional. It has not been cropped and I don’t believe I even really touched the color.

What strikes me here is how there’s nothing that’s complete really, yet all of the parts fit very nicely into the frame in a way that they’re mostly isolated from each other and other things. This is largely helped by the fact that I was shooting on a F1.4 aperture, meaning if something isn’t in sharp focus, it’s probably very blurred. So the bold lines of the frame and tire really stand out. The red arm with its patterned fabric really pops. It’s these well defined objects on a soft, mostly white background.

The whole nothingness of the top center and right part of the frame is also very nice. Unfortunately the whiteness of this webpage makes it hard to really see where the photo ends, but alas, it could be worse.

Finally, the color is really working for me. It’s sparse, but it pops. I guess it’s just the red on the sleeve and the yellow mallet head that stand out. There’s orange in a cone, blue in the handlebar grips, yellow on the helmet strap etc… but that stuff is really second to the bigger and brighter splotches.

Polo!
