White Balance

This is a tricky situation. I had to upload this photo three times with different color adjustments to make it appear here how it does in my editing software. Haven’t had that problem before… not sure if it has to do with color spaces or perhaps just the colors in this image… but this image doesn’t work without the right color. Not for me at least.

There’s supposed to be some orange/skin toned punch coming from the legs with some faded pink in the pillows and the red in the circles of the headboard. This is all within the context of an incorrectly white balanced photo where everything is decidedly blue/purplish. For some reason that really made the image for me.

What you don’t see is how the flash was set up. See the shadows coming off the legs? I was holding my external flash on a six foot light stand, using it like you’d use a boom mic almost. Dangling it above, almost near the ceiling with the light coming straight down. Also, this light was highly concentrated (zoomed to 85mm for those in the know with speedlights), so the right half of the image wasn’t just photoshop burned out.

Speaking of the right side, isn’t that nice? These “inky shadows” (reference to Car Talk) with some lines running through’em, though not noticeable until you peer into it. Other’n that, I really like the lamp on top left.

Legs, man.
