Stitched and Spun

It’s a bit gruesome, but… man I love this shot. It’s the underbelly of a pig turning on a giant metal pole being roasted over hot coals.

The color… oh the color.  The pig is all deep blood and juices and burnt skin.  They’re all super warm, pushing into hot when they’re contrasted against each other. Of course, the pig itself is incredibly hot here, but the coals are providing all the heat. The coals however show no heat. They’re just little lumps of gray and black.  They look like old ash, or perhaps piles of dirty salt stones. So…. the warmth of the color plays around with the reality of the warmth here.

Next, there’s three distinct textures in horizontal strips here.  The pig is all skin, glistening with oils and a bunch of vertical stripes that have formed.  Pretty grisly. Then there’s the middle area, a darker more peppered grey.  Below are the coals, all rocky and contrasty with … I guess it’s just a very rocky pattern. No rhyme or reason to it, but an overall natural feel.

The last detail I want to point out is the number 045 stamped on the pig, up on the top right. It was a very bright red on the pale pink skin before the cooking began, but it has now become a much more rich and deep red. Somewhere there’s number 001-044, and 044-infinity.
