My 11E seat en route to sunnyland (Phoenix) had me next to an 11F graphic designer, with whom conversation eventually drifted into photography and my more recent work in the medium. She liked this. Among a couple other images.
Not that I completely overlooked this at the time it was shot – there’s something to it that makes it likable (or more hopefully high-impact) and, for me at least, an image with some lasting value to it. Different people see different things in collections of images and the self portrait genre probably amplifies that phenomenon.
The creator of a self portrait is incredibly linked to it – the entire concept of self, of body image, of representation and identity, are all contained within it. But the reviewer or observer of someone else’s self portrait… they didn’t spend the last 22 years seeing that face in the mirror and living with the mind behind the facade. Interesting…
To whiffs of curled sideburnish hair.
